Step 1It was important to get the shutters extremely clean before I began painting. I use my Clean Slate solution for jobs like these. It removes dirt, wax, grease – literally anything years of use can throw at you!
Step 2Now that my surfaces were clean and ready to paint, I coated the shutters in an even layer of my One Step in Linen. Though I was planning to finish the shutters in a blue tone, the calcium bicarbonate in my chalk based paint acts as an indispensable priming layer. Not only will it adhere to virtually any surface, but once it is on it is the ideal base coat for all other paints!
Step 3While my initial coat of One Step was drying (about 30 minutes), I mixed 50% Toscana Milk Powder in Cote D’Azur with 50% water.
Pro Tip: I have learned to mix the two ingredients in a sealable jar and vigorously shake instead of stirring. To finish, I scoop off the foam layer or strain it with cheesecloth. Though this practice gives an optimally mixed solution, you don't want to paint with foam!
Step 4As I brushed on the Toscana Milk Paint, I allowed at least 20 minutes dry time between layers. Though Toscana Milk Paint applies a lot thinner than most paints, it covers well trust me! Don't try to make it too thick, allow this timeless solution to do it’s job.
Step 5In order to achieve an authentic “antique” finish, I needed my secret weapon. I loaded my china bristle brush with my Antiquing Glaze and splattered the solvent all over the shutters. I let the glaze dry for at least 5 to 10 minutes. This step will take your antiquing process to a whole new level!
Step 6After my splatters had cured, I immersed a natural sea sponge into the antiquing liquid. Be sure to squeeze out the excess solution. You don't want the glaze drip from your sponge. Using a firm patting motion, I applied an even layer of glaze to the entirety of shutter surfaces. You will begin to see the Toscana Milk Paint "lift" from the shutter exposing the Linen color underneath as you pat and pull.
Pro tip: Be mindful to not take too much paint off or drag your sponge across the paint layers. Work your way around the shutter in such a way that it replicates natural wear and weathering.
Step 7If the piece is being house inside you don't have to seal it with wax. However, I chose to seal the entire surface with a gentle layer of Light Antique Wax. I then accented the edges with Dark Antique Wax. Be sure to only apply your dark wax after your light wax has come to tack or almost completely dry. To finish I lightly buffed my waxes using a lint-free rag. I didn’t want too much of a sheen, but just enough wear to look authentically matted.I have to say, despite the numerous layers this project called for, the Toscana milk Paint application is still the star of this project.
