DIY Vintage Memo Board
The perfect accessory for your kitchen or office area is this adorable vintage memo board that was created using a brand new washboard from Ace Hardware that was only $11! Keep in mind the color combinations are endless! Chalkboards don’t have to be black, with our Amy Howard at Home One Step Paint this could be any custom color available at Ace Hardware, we chose our grey called Good Man is Hard to Find. Also, the Toscana Milk Paint comes in 14 colors, we wanted a pop of blue so we chose Cote d’Azure! It wouldn’t be complete without antiquing the metal area as well, so we used our Zinc Antiquing Solution!

1. Stain the Wood on the Washboard
Stain all wood surfaces with Amy Howard at Home ® Better with Age™. Allow to dry 30 minutes.
2. Tape off Metal Area for Applying Zinc Solution
FOR ZINC SECTION: Tape off metal section, and wipe this area down this area using Amy Howard at Home ® Clean Slate™ and a T-Shirt Rag to remove any dust, dirt, grease etc.
3. Prepare Zinc Solution
Pour Amy Howard at Home ® Zinc Solution™ into bowl, and put your gloves on. Gather your lint-free rag in a ball and dip the tip into the Amy Howard at Home ® Zinc Solution™ until it is saturated. Before applying the Zinc Solution™ to the metal, gently squeeze out the dripping excess from rag.
4. Apply Zinc Solution
Evenly saturate entire surface of metal area. Once surface is saturated, make a second pass, this time rubbing the Amy Howard at Home Zinc Solution™ in with a firm circular motion. Make sure to rub Zinc Solution™ into crevices to ensure a consistent finish. As the solution begins to dry, you will see your galvanized metal change to a lighter color. If you desire a darker patina, simply apply more solution. Allow to dry 30-45 minutes.
5. Apply One Step Paint
FOR CHALKBOARD SECTION: Tape off top wood section, and paint with Amy Howard at Home ® One Step Paint™ – A Good Man is Hard to Find, using China Bristle Brush. Remove tape and allow to dry 30-45 minutes.
6. Prepare the Cracked Gesso
FOR TOSCANA MILK PAINT SECTION: Tape off chalkboard section. Mix Amy Howard at Home ® Cracked Gesso™ with water at a 1:1 ratio. Mix to the consistency of thin pancake batter. Pass through Cheesecloth to remove any froth or lumps that might not have mixed completely.
7. Apply Cracked Gesso
Apply two thin coats of Amy Howard at Home Cracked Gesso using China Bristle Brush. Allow to dry 30-45 minutes, and sand lightly with 400 Grit Sandpaper after second coat has dried.
8. Prepare Toscana Milk Paint
Mix Amy Howard at Home ® Toscana Milk Paint™ in Amalfi with water at a 1:1 ratio. Mix to the consistency of thin pancake batter. Pass through Cheesecloth to remove any froth or lumps that might not have mixed completely.
9. Apply Toscana Milk Paint
Using China Bristle Brush, paint all areas with the Toscana Milk Paint, over the Cracked Gesso. Allow to dry 30-45 minutes, or dry to the touch.
10. Dilute and Apply Antiquing Glaze
Pour Amy Howard at Home ® Antiquing Glaze™ into a bowl. Saturate Natural Sea Wool Sponge with Antiquing Glaze Solution, and lightly squeeze sponge so that it is not dripping, but keeping enough solution in the sponge to reduce tool marks within your Toscana finish. Organically pounce the sponge over entire surface. As you begin to add the glaze, the Toscana Milk Paint™ will reactivate and wear away creating a beautiful, aged look to your piece. Allow to dry 20-30 minutes. If there are areas that need additional antiquing, or if there are any areas that had too much paint removed, those adjustments can be made at this point. Allow to dry 20-30 minutes.
11. Apply Light Wax
Using a China Bristle Brush and Amy Howard at Home ® Light Wax, get just enough wax to cover the tips of the bristles. Offload some was from the brush to Cardboard Palette. *Always offload; you should never go directly from the wax to your piece. Apply the Light Wax over entire Toscana-painted area, in a “cross hatch” pattern – not long, symmetrical strokes. Allow to dry for about 20 minutes, long enough for the piece to come to “tack”.
12. Apply Dark Wax
Using a China Bristle Brush and Amy Howard at Home ® Dark Wax, get just enough wax to cover the tips of the bristles. Offload some was from the brush to Cardboard Palette. *Be sure not to apply the Dark Wax too heavily. Different from the Light Wax, use China Bristle Brush to “feather” the Dark Wax over specific areas where the piece would naturally become worn, using on roughly 20% of the piece, not covering the entire piece. Allow to dry for about 20 minutes, long enough for the piece to come to “tack”.
13. Buff Washboard with T-shirt Rag
Use a T-Shirt Rag to buff the waxed areas, like you would buff a shoe in a hit-drag motion. This buffing will result in the beautiful patina shine that gives the piece an authentic aged look.
14. Season Chalk Board and Add a Message
Rub a piece of chalk over the One Step Paint area, wipe it off with a t-shirt rag. Write a chalk title or message.
