DIY Chalk-Based Paint Pillow

In Textiles & Upholstery, Tutorials by Tess DeViney

I am a firm believer that the decorative accessories you choose can determine a room’s allure as much as the furnishing you put them on! The popularity of decorative pillows has taken off just as much as their price tags! It is nothing to see a luxury throw pillow sell for well over $100. I would like to show you how you can make as many of your very own luxury throw pillow as you want and for a fraction of that cost!

Products we used:

Step 1

Start with a clean solid muslin or linen pillowcase in any size. We have used a 20” pillowcase for our project.

Step 2

In a large washable tub, mix two parts water with one part Amy Howard at Home© One Step Paint in any color. We chose Ballet White™ to brighten and mute the fabric’s original tones. Mix thoroughly.

Step 3

Dip pillowcase into watery paint solution until the entire pillowcase is entirely saturated.

Step 4

Squeeze out all excess solution, then lay your fabric out flat and allow ample drying time.

Step 5

Once your pillowcase is completely dry, tape your Amy Howard at Home© Honey Bun™ stencil to the center of your pillow. Secure the edges of the center medallion design to prevent paint from bleeding through.

Step 6

In a separate washable container, mix four parts Amy Howard at Home© One Step Paint™ in Selznick Grey™ with one part water. Stir until solution is mixed thoroughly.

Step 7

Dip your Amy Howard at Home© large round natural bristle brush into your paint solution, offload excess paint and stipple across the center medallion design. Allow this layer to dry completely before moving forward.

Step 8

One section at a time, tape off bordering lines around medallion design. Stipple your paint solution between taped areas. Allow each line to dry before moving on to the next. We chose to add 8 bordering lines around our pillow, but you could choose any number in any color!

Step 9

After all of your paint has completely dried, remove tape. Lay your Amy Howard at Home© Honey Bun™ stencil back on the pillow in the exact same area and tape down all of the edges as before.

Step 10

In a separate washable container mix two parts Amy Howard at Home© Glazed Over with one part Amy Howard at Home© Mica Powder in Deep Gold. Stir until the metallic solution is thoroughly mixed.

Step 11

Load a clean dampened sea sponge with mica solution and offload excess. Tap mica directly onto the painted medallion. Continue to stipple mica onto the pillow case until full coverage has been achieved.

Step 12

Slowly remove your stencil. Once your mica layer has dried, your beautiful new pillowcase is ready to adorn your favorite seat!

Enjoy the bragging rights!
