In this workshop, Jamie Orsburn, an Amy Howard at Home artist-in-residence, demonstrates how to transform an ornate mirror frame with an old-world milk paint finish.
Using a blend of milk paints, crack gesso, and antiquing glaze, Jamie guides us through a layered approach to achieve a rich, textured look reminiscent of antique decor.
Begin by applying a layer of crack gesso to the mirror frame. This creates a textured foundation that emulates aged plaster, ideal for milk paint adhesion and adding a natural-looking base.
Once the gesso is dry, mix and apply a layer of Central Park milk paint. This light blue shade adds the first color layer. Be sure to cover the frame thoroughly, reaching into all the cracks for even coverage.
When the first coat dries, apply the Southern Gentleman milk paint over it. This darker shade contrasts with Central Park, creating depth. Allow some areas of the base color to show through for a layered effect.
Dip the sea wool sponge into the antiquing glaze, squeeze out excess, and dab it across the frame. The sponge's texture adds an organic, varied pattern that mimics natural wear, enhancing the vintage effect.
Once the glaze is dry, use light wax to seal and protect the painted layers. Then, lightly apply dark wax around the edges and intricate details to give the frame more depth and an aged appearance.
For the final step, sprinkle Dust of Ages over the frame. This powder settles into crevices, creating a subtle, dusty finish that brings the entire look together.
This layered process with crack gesso, milk paints, and antiquing glaze results in an elegant, old-world look perfect for ornate frames and mirrors. Try this at home to bring antique-inspired charm to your decor!
