Transform a Thrifted Burl Wood Vanity

Transform a Thrifted Burl Wood Vanity

, by Ryan Casuga, 2 min reading time

In this workshop, Amy Howard transforms a vintage Carpathian Elm burl wood vanity using One Step Paint and other refinishing techniques.

Follow this step-by-step guide to bring new life to your own furniture pieces.

Materials Used:

Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Cleaning the Surface:

Start by cleaning the entire surface of the furniture piece using Clean Slate. This removes any waxes, oils, and buildup that might prevent the paint from adhering properly.

2. Repairing the Veneer:

For areas where the veneer is lifting, inject wood glue under the veneer with a syringe. Clamp the surface to secure the veneer in place until the glue dries.

3. Applying One Step Paint:

Use One Step Paint in black for the sides, front, and legs of the vanity. The black paint will create a beautiful contrast against the burl wood veneer. Apply two thin coats for best results, allowing each coat to dry completely before adding the next.

4. Gilding the Hardware:

While the paint dries, apply gold leaf or metallic paint to the hardware for a subtle, distressed look. Let the hardware dry and set it aside.

5. Applying Furniture Tonic to Burl Wood:

To refresh the burl wood veneer, use Furniture Tonic. This hemp-based oil will hydrate the wood and bring out its natural beauty, restoring its rich tones.

6. Adding Design Details:

For an extra touch, apply stencils on the sides of the drawers using Mesh Stencils and ink. This adds a personalized, artistic element to the piece.

7. Sealing with Wax and Dust of Ages:

Once the paint is dry, apply Light Antique Wax over the painted areas. After the wax has dried to a tacky finish, dust the surface with Dust of Ages to give the piece an antique, aged look. Buff the surface for a smooth, rich patina.

By following this process, you’ll transform any piece into a beautifully restored, functional work of art.

Whether you're rescuing a vintage vanity like Amy Howard or adding flair to a modern piece, these techniques will help you achieve stunning results.
