If you've ever dreamed of achieving a sleek, high-gloss finish on your furniture, cabinetry, or decorative projects—without needing a sprayer—this tutorial is for you.
In this workshop, Lyonella Cook takes us step-by-step through the process of using Amy Howard at Home’s LuxeLacquer. Whether you're using a brush, roller, or foam tip brush, she shares expert tips to help you master this high-performance paint.
From essential prep work to advanced finishing techniques, you'll learn how to build a flawless lacquered surface with patience, precision, and the right products. Let’s dive into everything you need to get started.
LuxeLacquer is Amy Howard at Home’s premium, oil-based lacquer designed for a rich, professional-grade finish without a sprayer. Perfect for both beginners and experienced painters, it delivers durability and sheen for pieces that look like they came straight from a design showroom.
Unlike milk paint, which is known for its vintage charm and imperfection, LuxeLacquer is all about precision. It rewards discipline and technique—and once you master it, you’ll have a valuable skill set that sets your work apart.
To ensure a flawless result, proper tools and prep are non-negotiable. Here’s what Lyonella recommends:
Start by cleaning with Clean Slate or mineral spirits. Sand with 200 grit, vacuum, tack, and wipe with mineral spirits. Repeat between every layer for best results. Remember: a perfect topcoat starts with a perfect base.
Use thin coats—two is ideal. Mix in mineral spirits (up to 20% by volume) to adjust consistency, and strain the primer before application. You can apply using a brush or roller followed by a foam tipping brush.
📝 Pro Tip: Keep notes on your mix ratios to replicate your success later.
Once your primer has cured, it’s time for the LuxeLacquer topcoat:
Apply with a nylon brush or foam roller.
Use a foam brush to tip out bubbles or streaks.
Thin coats only. More layers = smoother results.
If needed, adjust with Penetrol to improve flow (especially in humid or dry conditions), but avoid overusing as it can reduce sheen or cause yellowing in whites.
After each coat dries completely (allow time for humidity!), sand with 400 grit, vacuum, tack, and wipe down with mineral spirits again. Patience is key here—rushing can lead to wrinkles, roping, and frustration.
Q: Do I need to use the LuxeLacquer Primer?
A: Yes! This system is designed to work together. The primer is essential for building a smooth, sealed base.
Q: Can I spray LuxeLacquer instead of brushing?
A: Yes—but we recommend mastering brush and roller application first. Spraying techniques will be covered in an upcoming workshop.
Q: How long should I wait between coats?
A: Allow ample dry time. Humidity, temperature, and product thickness all affect dry time. Always test the surface before proceeding.
Whether you’re refinishing a statement piece, creating cabinetry that shines, or prepping for high-end design projects, LuxeLacquer gives you the finish to match. The process takes time and attention—but with practice, you’ll be creating beautifully lacquered surfaces that turn heads and last for years.
Stay tuned for Part 2, where Lyonella takes us into her warehouse to demonstrate LuxeLacquer spraying techniques using three different types of sprayers!
