Gilding is an age-old technique that can instantly elevate the look of your furniture, adding a touch of luxury and sophistication.

Amy Howard demonstrates how you can easily achieve this stunning effect using simple steps and high-quality materials.

Materials Needed:

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Preparation

Begin by cleaning your piece thoroughly. Make sure the surface is free of dust, grime, and old finishes. A clean surface ensures better adhesion for the gilding size and gold leaf.

2. Apply Gilding Size

Using a chip brush, apply a thin layer of Gilding Size to the areas you wish to gild. Let the size come to tack, which means it should be sticky but not wet.

3. Applying the Gold Leaf

Carefully place the Gold Leaf over the tacky gilding size. Press down gently to ensure good adhesion. You can use a soft China Bristle Brush to smooth out the leaf and remove any excess.

4. Distressing the Leaf (Optional)

For a more vintage or distressed look, gently rub back some of the gold leaf with fine steel wool after it has adhered. This will give your piece a timeworn, elegant appearance.

5. Sealing with Wax

To protect your gilded finish, apply a layer of Light Wax followed by Dark Wax if you want to add an antiqued effect. The wax not only seals the leaf but also adds depth and character to the finish.

6. Final Touches

Buff the waxed areas with a clean, soft cloth to bring out a subtle sheen, enhancing the luxurious look of your newly gilded furniture.

By following these steps, you can create a high-end, gilded look that adds an opulent touch to any piece of furniture in your home.
