Looking for a way to bring an antique, chippy look to your home decor?

Join decorative artist Patricia Skelton as she demonstrates how to create a stunning aged finish on a thrift-store urn using Amy Howard at Home products.

Perfect for your fall floral centerpiece, this technique is a fun way to transform ordinary objects into timeless treasures.

Materials Needed:

Instructions:

Prep Your Surface

  • Begin by applying Amy Howard at Home One Step Paint to your urn or container. This will act as a base for the finish, allowing the paint to adhere properly to the glossy surface.

Apply Crack Gesso

  • Mix one part Crack Gesso with one part water. Use a brush to apply an even coat to your project. For a chippy look, use a sea wool sponge to apply the second coat after the first has dried.

Apply Milk Paint

  • After the gesso dries, mix your Milk Paint (in the color Central Park) with water. Stir continuously as you apply, working in layers for the desired chippy effect.

Distress with Antiquing Glaze

  • Apply Antiquing Glaze over the milk paint using a sponge to create a worn, aged look. The glaze will lift the paint in areas, creating the perfect distressed finish.

Seal with Wax

  • Apply Light Wax followed by Dark Wax for added dimension. Use a lint-free cloth to remove any excess and create a smooth finish.

Add Dust of Ages

  • Finally, apply Dust of Ages over the waxed surface to give your urn that time-worn patina. Let it sit for an hour before brushing off the excess.

With just a few steps and the right products, you can achieve a beautiful, chippy aged finish perfect for your fall decor.

Not only does this technique add character and texture, but it's also an easy way to upcycle thrifted items into stunning statement pieces for your home.
